New resources from CARE for Education

CARE for Education are spearheading an initiative to give youngsters a better start than the problem page in their favourite magazine. They have prepared a whole strategy for Marriage Education - from early years to sixth form - and want to begin by producing three new resources:

Stories for the Early Years is a set of story books for parents and teachers to read with the very young (age 2-4). Colourful drawings will accompany these stories about marriage and family life. Titles include:

  • My Family Tree
  • The Wedding
  • The Christening
  • Remembering Gran

Growing up Together, is a rich set of learning resources for Key stages 1 & 2 (ages 5-10). The complete package includes 2 CD ROMs as well as the 'Growing up Together' video. These two resources offer schools a complete solution to their PSHE needs. Both CD-Roms and Video use film footage to present real life situations and include off-screen worksheets and questions for further class work (which the user can print). The video also contains a teacher training section with questions to assist schools in developing their PSHE policy documents and teaching strategies. Topics include:

  • Social relationships
  • Caring for one another
  • Celebrations - Marriage and birthdays
  • Parenting and childbirth
  • Disability
  • Peer pressure
  • Sex Education

What is Marriage? are resources for Key Stages 2 & 3 (ages 9-13) to help children relate to the theme of love and marriage in a way that is appropriate for their age groups. Experienced teachers have developed the two packages.

The Key Stage 2 resource includes The Marriage Game, a board game which teaches children basic information about marriage. There are also accompanying worksheets and fact sheets for the children to use with additional material as a guide to teachers.

The Key Stage 3 resource focuses on a fictional couple, Tom and Lily. Having first learnt about marriage and relationships through the work sheets and discussion material, the task of the pupils is to decide if Tom and Lily should get married. There is also a similar "Marriage - The Right Track" board game in this package involving a maze of questions through which the pupils have to work in order to reach the right answer.

The M Word is a video and Teacher's Guide for 14-16 year old students designed in response to teacher demand and government guidelines on Sex and Relationships Education. The video deals with the contemporary myths that Marriage is:

  • Unnecessary and boring
  • Wonderful and gorgeous
  • Doomed to failure
  • Too much like hard work
  • Something you do last

For the over 16's Exploring Marriage with Newsdesk is an exciting and innovative resource including a CD Rom and Teacher's Guide. Students are invited to become reporters for a Television News company and with the online facilities of an editing suite, video and stills library, interviews with two couples, a resources library as well as personal research within their own communities they will produce a three minute programme looking at the relevance of Marriage in the 21st century.
