In many parts of the world, marriage and long-term relationships are under threat or attack. Certainly, there is much debate about marriage as institution and phenomenon in different societies. The Conference will explore the difficulties of marriage and long-term relationships and whether it is possible (or ever was) to build and sustain these in the twenty-first century. Are we all pursuing a dream or wish-fulfilment, or can we arrive at conclusions in relation to sustainability that will aid our societies and the people who make them up? Is a marriage or long-term relationship possible in a world of equality?
Individuals and organizations involved in couple and family counselling and therapy, family organisations, research, social policy, family-related legislation and legal processes, relationship education, and the provision of welfare services are invited to participate in this important conference.
Among the sub-topics to be addressed will be:

- The history of marriage and long-term relationships
- Couples therapy – how it can make a difference
- The role of marriage and relationship preparation
- Equality and partnership
- How Research can help Couples (eg., Gottman; “The Sound Marital House”)
- Towards Preventive work with Couples
- Sexuality
- Support for children in marriage and breakdown
Workshops offering the chance to explore topics in more depth. Study group sessions developing international and multidisciplinary perspectives on conference topics and participants’ interests. The conference language will be English.A mixture of cultural events and informal entertainment will make up the social programme.
