One Plus One
Introduction
One Plus One monitors contemporary marriages and relationships, focusing on understanding the causes, effects and prevention of relationship breakdown, which it has pioneered as a public health issue.
Through its unique interdisciplinary team of researchers and practitioners, it puts research into practice in innovative community projects to help couples and their families.
One Plus One is core funded by the British government and is one of the national marriage organisations.
Research is the
foundation of One Plus One's practical work: monitoring marriage and longterm
partnerships, to see how they are changing, what factors cause breakdown, and how people
stay together.
It undertakes its own original projects and also draws together other research from
the UK and abroad, presenting it in a way that policy makers and the public can
understand.
For example, it has recently completed the most comprehensive review ever in the UK of
research undertaken on the causes of relationship breakdown, and the effectiveness of
current remedies and policies, as a foundation for British government policy development.
It uses research to develop practical projects with professionals and families in the community. It does
this by training health professionals and others working with families to identify
relationship difficulties and to offer effective, acceptable and accessible support to
those families. Because its practical projects are grounded in research, they are informed
and more likely to be achievable.
It publishes a quarterley bulletin, reports and statistical information and offers library services.
