Positive Parenting Publications and Programmes

Introduction

Positive Parenting is now an established national charity with a growing reputation for producing user-friendly, easy-to-read material which works with low level readers and ethnic users.

They aim to provide information, training and resources to equip parents and those who support them.

Since the publication of their parenting course Time out for Parents! at the end of 1999, they have run a steady nationwide programme of Training Days for would-be presenters of the course. Time out for Parenting is available in Urdu and Punjabi, with refinements which reflect the cultural backgrounds of these language communities, from June 2001

Parent-to-Parent on Special Needs is a major new resource for professionals working to support families with special needs children. It is a beautifully presented photo-copiable manual containing parents' stories, backed with professional information covering a range of conditions.

This can be used as a resource for the new parenting course for parents with children with special needs, "Time Out for Special Needs". This course can be run by professionls or trained parents. It provides parents with opportunities to talk with others in the same situation to discuss their experiences as well as the challenges they face in supporting the whole family. Subjects covered include, self esteem and managing behaviour, home/school issues, impact on brothers and sisters and the wider family, coping with emotions and helping your child manage their condition. Special needs may be physical, intellectual, behavioural, short term or for life, low-level, moderate or severe.

Training days for health professionals working with special needs families called "Getting off to a good start!" are also available.
