Was my marriage real?

I a british christian man, married a Japanese girl (whom spoke little english) over a year ago in the U.A.E, we broke up shortly after because she didnt realise the wedding was a legal wedding and I also thought it meant nothing and feel it was void or at least voidable! I thought she understood what we were doing so now I have no idea what to do!

We sat with a solicitor the day of the wedding and she put her hand on the bible and copied the words the solicitor said, although after she said 'i dont know what that was' but it all seemed too late then!

In Japan people go through with christian type ceremonies but they are not legal and they just do it because they love the image, this I found out after we got married!

I dont know what to do - as a christian man, I can never marry again because of this huge mistake!

help!!!!

Re: Was my marriage real?

Hi there

You sound very down, but let me gently challenge some of your assumptions. You say that you can never marry again because of the mistake that you made. What is that based on? Christians do divorce and re-marry, although different parts of the church view this differently. In particular if your wife didn't take the commitment she was making seriously then some parts of the church eg the Catholic Church would see that as grounds for annulment.

Above all God is a God of forgiveness, so I suggest that you seek out a Christian minister to talk things through. I believe there are churches in UAE - perhaps you already attend one.
