Increasing the numbers of people participating in adult relationship education

It is the intention of the organisation I work with, UPF, to work with other organisations to explore all possible ways of increasing the numbers of people participating in adult relationship education in the UK, well above the currently estimated 7% of new marriages (does anyone have data on cohabiting couples doing ths?).
We would be very interested to enter into a discussion about all manner of creative ways to do this in the UK. UPF has started its own initiative in Bromley and Birmingham with 5 new practitioners of PREPARE/ENRICH trained recently as well as 7 new practitioners in Birmingham, with another 8 to come, representing four different faiths, but this is just a start.
Let us investigate how to be able to use the tools for helping to prevent relationship breakdown more intensively.

Re: Increasing the numbers of people participating in adult relationship education

The biggest barriers are the general public perception that to do anything in the form of Relationship Education is tantamount to admitting that there are problems in the relationship. People see it as "counselling" (= breakdown) not as something healthy.

What we need is a shift in public perception that doing a course is more like going to the gym than going to the doctor.

That's a great way to put it, Dave! If people would only realize this, they would not be so hesitant to participate in Relationship Education.

Mad, isn't it - you get sex education at school, but not relationship education!

I liken relationships to a car. You take your car in for regular servicing and MOT's, but with relationships we tend to wait until the wheels fall off...

I'd certainly attend something like that, but unfortunately I'm in the SE

Hi Wiggle (love that name!)

Take a look at http://www.2-in-2-1.co.uk/healthclub/servprov/ on the site - you'll find there are various local courses as well as national organisations that could offer what you want. Try it - it's how we got started on this road 25 years ago!
