My name is Victoria Clarke and I am a psychologist and researcher at the University of Exeter. I am working with two other psychologists (Dr. Carole Burgoyne and Dr. Janet Reibstein) on a project looking at the views and beliefs of newly married couples. This project is funded by The Lord Chancellor’s Department as part of a wider agenda to provide support for families.
We’d like to find out how couples who are about to get married for the first time make all sorts of decisions – decisions like: who does the housework, how will the bills be paid, how much money to spend on entertainment, and so on. We are also interested in what people think and believe about marriage – for example, do they believe it is for life? Is marriage a relationship of equals?
We are looking for couples based in the South West UK who are planning to get married (for the first time) sometime in 2002/2003 to join our study. It will not take up much of your time, but if you do decide to take part, you’ll be helping us to understand what makes for a successful marriage, and how we might be able to help other couples to deal with the ups and downs of the first few years.
We’d like to interview you and give you a questionnaire to complete before you get married at a convenient venue (and interview you again about a year later). Any information you give us will be anonymous and treated in the strictest confidence.
It would be great if you could help us. If you are interested in taking part or want to know more before deciding, please contact me by email <V.Clarke@Exeter.ac.uk> or telephone (either 01392 264616). Thank you!
