A couple from Shropshire married for 58 years have been named by the NSPCC as the country's most romantic couple.

Ted and Joy Cowling were chosen from hundreds of couples to win the title for Valentine's Day. They met in 1945 when he was a flying instructor and she, a radio telephonist at Castle Combe, Wiltshire.

Asked what makes them one of the most romantic couples of the year, Joy replied firmly: "It's not about the year, it's about the last 50 years."

The couple have lost two daughters to cancer but battled on through the terrible grief.

"It's been a long marriage but we have stuck together and helped each other through," said Ted.

"It's about love and respect. I respect the very shoes Joy is standing in today."

"We are in love," added Joy. "We've never fallen out of love. We still hold hands, even if it's just to help each other stand up!"
